Adam Hamilton has clinched a historic victory in the US Senate race in Kansas, becoming the first Democrat to represent the state in the chamber since 1932. Kansas emerged as an unexpected battleground this year as Democrats sought to regain control of the Senate. The closely watched Cook Political Report rated the race as a toss-up, noting it was one of several agriculture-heavy areas to be hit hard by high fuel and fertilizer prices because of Donald Trump’s war on Iran.

Republican incumbent Roger Marshall, 66, has served as a US senator for the state since 2021. Before that, he served the state in the US House of Representatives for two terms. But it was his work as an obstetrician that factored heavily into his reelection campaign, after the New York Times reported that he had sued hundreds of his patients for unpaid bills, including dozens who were arrested after missing their court dates.

Democratic pastor Hamilton, 62, leads the largest United Methodist congregation in the country, United Methodist Church of the Resurrection based in the Kansas City area. He calls himself an “independent-minded Democrat” and had argued Kansas would benefit from having one US senator from each party. The state’s other seat is held by Republican Jerry Moran.

Trump won Kansas by 16 points in 2024. But Marshall’s liabilities, particularly the medical billing scandal, and Hamilton’s attempt at a pragmatic bipartisan appeal helped tighten the race this year. Trump rallied in Kansas in late October in hopes of inspiring Republican voters to turn out for Marshall.

Hamilton told voters during the campaign that he would be more accessible to them than Marshall has been in office. Marshall, notably, last held an open town hall with his constituents in early 2025, when he left the town hall after facing pointed questions. (Marshall has said the town halls became “non-productive and dangerous”.) It’s not unheard of for Kansas to elect Democrats to statewide roles. Laura Kelly, the state’s outgoing governor, is a Democrat and has held the governorship since 2019.
